Are public libraries still needed?

As a group, we recommend

We believe that public libraries continue to play an important role in our communities, though their function may need to evolve. Libraries serve as hubs for learning, technology access, and community engagement, providing essential services especially for those who lack resources at home. They offer educational programs, safe spaces, and promote sustainability through shared resources, including traditional book lending. Libraries contribute to reducing waste and can serve as centers for environmental awareness, potentially hosting community gardens or sustainability workshops. We recognize that the digital age has changed how people access information, and there are concerns about the cost-effectiveness of maintaining libraries, particularly in smaller communities. We suggest that libraries could adapt by carefully expanding their services to include more diverse activities and resources that meet modern community needs, while preserving their core functions. Libraries also have the potential to bridge cultural divides in diverse communities. The specific implementation and scale of library services may need to be tailored to the size and requirements of each community, balancing expansion with fiscal responsibility.

Yes

Yes, for sure! For many people, the internet is not yet that easy to use. Also, we have so many books that can't be found online. Libraries also fulfil a public function.

Strong no

If you think about the cost of keeping all these libraries open, it's pretty crazy. People don't read books as they used to, the internet has replaced so much of our information consumption.

At least, smaller villages don't need a library. And the function of libraries should evolve. For example, in Finland, libraries are places where people can do many activities for free, like playing music, 3d printing, cookies, ... That would make sense (but even then, is it worth the cost?)

Strong yes

Public libraries are absolutely essential in our communities. They're not just about books anymore; they're hubs of learning, technology access, and community engagement. For many people, especially in urban areas, libraries provide crucial internet access and computer resources. They offer educational programs for all ages, from children's storytimes to adult literacy classes. Libraries also serve as safe spaces for vulnerable populations, like homeless individuals or at-risk youth. In our increasingly digital world, libraries help bridge the technology gap for those who can't afford personal devices or internet at home. They're also great for sustainability - why buy books when you can borrow and share? As someone passionate about education and sustainability, I believe libraries play a vital role in creating informed, connected, and environmentally conscious communities. We should be investing more in our libraries, not questioning their relevance.
