Should Go Vocal engage with governments that do not fully uphold democratic principles, if it allows us to reach and empower more citizens?
As a group, we recommend
We believe that engaging with governments that do not fully uphold democratic principles can be considered, as long as it allows us to reach and empower more citizens. However, we advise caution and recommend setting clear boundaries to ensure we maintain our values and do not become an instrument of such governments. We suggest evaluating each situation carefully, considering factors such as the extent of censorship and the specific topics affected. We recommend assessing whether each project would have more positive or negative implications, while maintaining a list of countries we would not work with under any circumstances. Our primary goal should be to give people a voice and promote inclusivity, while being mindful of potential risks and limitations in these contexts. We should ensure our software is designed to maximize citizens' ability to express themselves freely, while allowing flexibility for customers to use the platform in ways that empower their citizens.

What's your opinion?
👤 Participant 1
YesIf they are willing to engage with citizens then surely they are showing an openness to democracy. Just because the government isn't open does not mean the people in the government or the citizens aren't open to sharing.
👤 Participant 2
Weak yesIf the government enables a form of participation even if the government itself isn't fully democratic, I feel like we should at least give the people a voice. We should be careful to not become an instrument of said government and we should keep our values like inclusivity still in mind for example.
👤 Participant 3
Weak yesI think in general we need to check for two thing, first, to what extend the censorship and breaches of democracy are limited to a few select topics? To what extend the body that is buying the platform is responsible for those censorships and on a bigger picture, and whether there are any red lines that gov has crossed which puts it on a black list, like the taliban
