Should Barcelona ban short term rentals (airbnb-style) in order to avoid the displacement of locals?
As a group, we recommend
We believe that short-term rentals in Barcelona need to be carefully regulated and limited. While we recognize their potential benefits for tourism, we are concerned about their impact on local residents and housing affordability. We recommend implementing stricter controls on the number of short-term rentals allowed in the city to strike a balance between tourism needs and the preservation of local communities. This approach would help mitigate the displacement of residents while still allowing for some tourism-related economic benefits. Specifically, we propose setting a cap on the total number of short-term rental licenses issued, implementing a registration system for hosts, and enforcing penalties for non-compliance. We acknowledge that some of us prefer a completely free market approach, but as a group, we agree that some level of regulation is necessary to address the current imbalance in the housing market.

What's your opinion?
👤 Participant 1
Weak yesI think a certain number of short term rentals is fine. As long as it's not too many, and the market is properly regulated. But right now it's way too many.
👤 Participant 2
Strong noShort term rentals are good for tourism in the city
👤 Participant 3
YesYes, Barcelona should ban short-term rentals like Airbnb to protect local residents from displacement. These rentals drive up property prices and rents, making it difficult for locals to afford housing in their own neighborhoods. By prioritizing long-term housing, Barcelona can preserve its community, promote affordability, and reduce the strain on local infrastructure caused by excessive tourism. Banning short-term rentals would help ensure the city remains a vibrant, accessible place for residents, not just a destination for tourists.
